Short Background
The Department of Automation, Information and Control Systems (АICS) was established in 1999 with the splitting of the Department of Automation and Computer Science into two separate departments.
The Department is responsible for the training of students doing the Bachelor and Master degree courses in Automation, Information and Control Systems. The department staff conducts the training of students in the above mentioned major during the last four semesters of the curriculum for Bachelor degree, as well as the training in all subjects for the Master degree. The Department also trains Ph.D. students in the area of automated systems for information processing and control and elements and devices of automation. The staff of the Department includes predominantly young lecturers. The average age of the academic staff is 39 years.
During different periods the conduction of the teaching process has required the involvement of experts from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy – Sofia, the Technical University of Sofia and other Bulgarian universities, as well as professionals from industry.
The teaching process in the Department is focused on the following areas: theoretical foundations of control, microprocessors, programmable logic controllers, computer-based control systems, automation devices, object-oriented programming, databases in control systems, industrial communications and computer networks, intelligent sensors and systems, etc.
The Department has 6 teaching laboratories equipped with modern computers and control technology. Its premises also host laboratories in: Automation Tools equipped by SIEMENS, Industrial Automation equipped by BECKHOFF Automation, Programmable Logic Controllers equipped by UNITRONICS, Control Technology equipped by AMK.
The Department staff conducts research in the area of: automation elements, devices and systems and non-linear control systems.
The Department maintains close contacts with similar departments in other universities in this country and abroad, and also with a number of companies operating in the field of automation.
The Department has been working on projects under various international programmes, such as Leonardo da Vinci and CEEPUS. Within the framework of CEEPUS annual exchange of students and lecturers is carried out with partner universities.
The department is in charge of training in the following degree courses:
Automation, Robotics and Computer Control Systems – educational-qualification degree of Bachelor
Automation, Information and Control Systems – educational-qualification degree of Master
